Required licenses for deploying Terminal Server and MetaFrame and a description of the Microsoft License Server and Microsoft NT Workstation 4.0 license model
Deploying Terminal Server and MetaFrame on your network requires the following licenses:
Windows NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server Edition License
The Windows NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server Edition license is included with the purchase of Windows NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server Edition.
Windows NT Server Client Access License
Each device/computer or Windows-based terminal connecting to Terminal Server requires a Client Access License. Client Access Licenses permit clients to use the file, print, and other services provided by Windows NT Server. Terminal Server supports per seat licensing only; that is, each Client Access License is associated with the computer that accesses the server.
Windows NT Workstation 4.0 License
Each device/computer or Windows-based Terminal connecting to Terminal Server requires a Windows NT Workstation 4.0 license. Workstation licenses permit clients to use services provided by Terminal Server; for example, starting a Terminal Server session and running Windows-based applications on the server.
Citrix Licensing
The MetaFrame base license enables the multiuser features of MetaFrame. If the MetaFrame base license is not present, ICA connections are not supported. Every version of MetaFrame comes with a base license.
The following is a description of the Microsoft License Server and Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Licenses:
Microsoft License Server
Stores and tracks Windows NT Workstation licenses used by Terminal Server clients. Terminal Server License Manager is an administrative tool designed to help you track client usage of Terminal Server and ensure that you have purchased the proper number of Windows NT Workstation licenses. When the number of clients requesting licenses from License Server exceeds the number of licenses you have registered, you are reminded to purchase new licenses and register them. Use License Manager to register new licenses that you have purchased.
Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Licenses
If a client is running Windows NT Workstation 4.0, no additional license is required to connect to Terminal Server. You do not need to register Windows NT Workstation 4.0 clients on License Server. Terminal Server License Manager automatically recognizes these clients and tracks their usage of Terminal Server.
If a client is running Windows NT Workstation 3.51 or 3.5, you must purchase a Windows NT Workstation Version Upgrade for the client. Use Terminal Server License Manager to register the license by adding it to the Windows NT Workstation Version Upgrade license pack.
If a client is a Windows-based terminal or is running MS-DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 95, or other operating system, you must purchase a Windows NT Workstation 4.0 license for the client. Use Terminal Server License Manager to register the license by adding it to the Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Full License license pack.
