Objective
This article describes how to install XenDesktop/XenApp 7.x Controller Hotfixes Updates for Single and Multiple Delivery Controller environments with an existing site.
Instructions
Note: The steps involved in updating your Controller(s) differ slightly depending on whether or not the updates modify your DBschema. The hotfix documentation clearly states whether or not the update will modify the existing DBschema.
- Before applying the latest Controller component hotfixes, inform other administrators not to make any changes to the site during the installation of the update.??
- Verify Site stability:
Before updating the Site, ensure it is in stable condition. To do this:
Open Citrix Studio and run the Test site, Test catalog, and Test delivery group diagnostic tests. - Database backup (strongly recommended):
- Create a full backup of the databases and store them in a safe location so you can restore them later if need be.??
- Try to restore the databases in a Test environment to ensure the backup is good. For information about backing up and restoring your databases, see Knowledge Center article CTX135207?? -?? How to Backup and Restore your XenApp/XenDesktop Database.
- Unzip the Controller Hotfixes Update zip file to an accessible location.

Applying software updates:
Notes:- In multiple Controller environments, select and update a single Controller. Then verify the updates installed successfully. Then update the remaining Controllers.
- There is no binding order in which to apply the component hotfixes, and no restart is necessary in between hotfixes.
- Select the Controller you want to update and apply the individual component hotfixes to it.??
- Verify successful update:
Check the Install and Event Logs for information about any install failure.- If you notice any install errors, do not proceed with the upgrade. Contact Citrix Support immediately for assistance.??
Note: At this stage, a multiple Controller Site is not affected overall except for the individual Controller on which the install failure occurred. - If you do not observe any install error on the first Controller, reopen Citrix Studio to repeat Step 2.

- Repeat Steps 5 and 7 for each remaining Controller.
Upgrading the DBschema (required if the hotfix documentation indicates that the update modifies the DBschema):
Caution: This procedure is irreversible after you perform the DBschema upgrade unless you restore the databases from the backup and rebuild the Controller.Notes:
- During a database upgrade, Controllers cannot broker new connections for the Site, so plan carefully.
- During this step, a prompt appears for the License Server compatibility check to ensure that your License Server has the required version. If you are using the License Server released with XenDesktop 7.6 or from a more recent version, you do not need to upgrade the License server.

Click Continue to proceed with the DBschema upgrade.
Note: ?? After the database upgrade completes, Studio tests the environment and configuration, and then generates a summary report. If problems are identified, you can restore the database from your backup. After resolving any issues, you can upgrade the database again.
Upgrading the database and Site automatically:-
Launch Citrix Studio. After you choose to start the Site upgrade automatically and confirm that you are ready, the database and Site upgrade proceeds.
Upgrading the database and Site manually:
- Launch Citrix Studio. After you choose to manually upgrade the Site, the wizard checks for License Server compatibility and requests confirmation. After you confirm that you have backed up the database, the wizard generates and displays the scripts and a checklist of upgrade steps.
- Run the following scripts in the order shown:
??Script Description DisableServices.ps1 PowerShell script to be run by the Studio user on a Controller to disable product services. UpgradeSiteDatabase.sql SQL script to be run by the database administrator on the server containing the Site database, using a tool such as SQL Server Management Studio. UpgradeMonitorDatabase.sql SQL script to be run by the database administrator on the server containing the Monitor database, using a tool such as SQL Server Management Studio. UpgradeLoggingDatabase.sql SQL script to be run by the database administrator on the server containing the Configuration Logging database, using a tool such as SQL Server Management Studio. Run this script only if this database changes (for example, after applying a hotfix). EnableServices.ps1 PowerShell script to be run by the Studio user on a Controller to enable product services.

- Make sure you have completed the checklist tasks and click Finish upgrade and return to Common Tasks.
Restoring?? a Site after Upgrading the DBschema:
Multiple Controller environments:- Restore the databases from the backup.?? For information about backing up and restoring your data store, see Knowledge Center article CTX135207?? -?? How to Backup and Restore your XenApp/XenDesktop Database.
- From the working Controller, launch Citrix Studio to remove the failed Controller from the site.
- Rebuild the failed Controller with the version of XenDesktop and hotfixes and rejoin it to the site.
- Open Citrix Studio and run the Test site, Test catalog, and Test delivery group diagnostic tests.
- Revert the Controller’s VM image to the state before applying hotfixes.
- Restore the databases.
- Open Citrix Studio and run the Test site, Test catalog, and Test delivery group diagnostic tests.
