This article contains basic steps to determine if an issue occurs only in seamless mode.

Objective

This article outlines basic steps to determine if an issue with a Published Application occurs only in a Seamless session. After verifying the following steps, it is easier to determine area that needs to be looked at subsequently.

Note: This article is not intended to be used to troubleshoot actual Seamless issues, refer to CTX101644 - Seamless Configuration Settings?? for troubleshooting.

Seamless Published applications differ from regular published applications by appearing as if it is running directly on the local device and not in a windowed session as in the case with a fixed window published application or in a published desktop. Another difference is, the Windows Desktop/Shell is not present in a Seamless session.

Even with these differences the underlying mechanisms for running applications work the same as with other connection types. Following is a list of items to verify:

Server console – Does the application run on the server console ?

Some applications might work on a Windows workstation/Device but not on a Windows server. If an application has an issue running at the console then it might be necessary to inquire with the application vendor as to the compatibility requirements needed to run the application.

ICA/RDS Desktop session - Does the application run inside a Desktop session in either RDP or ICA ?

If an application cannot run or has an issue in a Desktop session then its possible that the application has some compatibility issue with Terminal Services. If this is the case then it might be necessary to inquire with the application vendor as to the compatibility requiremts needed to run the application. If the application executes successfully in a Desktop session but not in a Seamless session verify the following sections?? to determine if it still might be a Seamless issue.

RDS Initial/Starting program – Does the application require a full Windows desktop in order to fully function ?

Some applications might have dependencies on the Windows Explorer/Desktop. A Seamless session is executed in this type of session – with no Windows Desktop. If the application executes successfully in a Desktop session but not in a Seamless session or in a RDS Initial/Starting program case then it might be necessary to inquire with the application vendor as to the compatibility requirements needed to run the application.

ICA non-Seamless Published Application – Does the application run in an ICA Fixed-Window session ?

In this type of session the application runs in a fixed session window and is similar to a Seamless and also a RDS Initial/Starting program session in that there is no Windows Explorer/Desktop. If an application works for this type of session and all of the above session types but not in Seamless then it is best to investigate the Seamless functionality further.

If a problem exists when testing the application under any RDP connection type, it is recommended to also test using a Windows server with no Citrix software installed to completely rule out any Citrix software involvement in the particular issue.

Instructions

Complete the following procedure to allow RDS initial/starting program to work.

  1. Access to unlisted programs have to be set to “Allow users to start both listed and unlisted programs on initial connection”.?? Refer to CTX121487 - RDP Initial Application Cannot be Started when Connecting to Windows Server 2008 Terminal Server.
