Summary

This document contains information about the two supported deployment scenarios for a Citrix Branch Repeater appliance with an Access Gateway Enterprise Edition appliance.

Deployment of the Citrix Branch Repeater Appliance in a Network with Access Gateway Plug-in, ICA Plug-in, and Repeater Plug-in

In this deployment, the ICA traffic is tunneled through an encrypted SSL VPN and sent to the Access Gateway Enterprise Edition appliance. The network traffic is then sent to the Citrix Branch Repeater appliance.

This deployment of the Citrix Branch Repeater appliance has the following advantages:

  • Does not require any change to the existing remote access infrastructure.
  • You cannot access the Citrix Branch Repeater appliance directly from the Internet.
  • Tested and supported for several earlier releases of Citrix Branch Repeater and Access Gateway Enterprise Edition appliances.

This deployment of the Citrix Branch Repeater appliance has the following disadvantages:

  • Does not provide cross-session ICA acceleration.
  • Requires the coordination of three client-side components mitigated by Citrix Receiver or Merchandising Server.
  • Requires an SSL VPN tunnel.

Refer to the Knowledge Center article CTX121035 – Turbocharge Access Gateway Deployment Guide and Reference Architecture for more details about this deployment.

Deployment of the Citrix Branch Repeater Appliance in a Network with ICA plug-in and a Citrix Branch Repeater Pair

In this deployment, a Citrix Branch Repeater appliance is installed in the remote branch location. A data center Citrix Branch Repeater appliance is installed in the network with an Access Gateway Enterprise Edition appliance such that the network traffic reaches the Citrix Branch Repeater appliance and then sent to an Access Gateway Enterprise Edition appliance. This deployment allows the use of ICA Proxy mode.

This deployment of the Citrix Branch Repeater appliance has the following advantages:

  • Provides cross-session ICA acceleration.
  • Does not require Citrix Branch Repeater plug-in or Access Gateway Enterprise Edition plug-in, as it works in ICA Proxy mode.

This deployment of the Citrix Branch Repeater appliance has the following disadvantages:

  • Requires changes to the existing infrastructure. You need to install the Citrix Branch Repeater appliance in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and install the Access Gateway Enterprise Edition appliance such that the network traffic reaches the Citrix Branch Repeater appliance and then sent to the Access Gateway Enterprise Edition appliance.
  • Exposes the signaling IP address to the Internet. The Citrix Branch Repeater appliance was not designed as a security appliance.
  • Requires Citrix Branch Repeater software release 5.7 for SSL acceleration.

Refer to the Knowledge Center article CTX126301 – How to Accelerate ICA Proxy Mode in NetScaler Gateway with CloudBridge for more details about this deployment.

Note: Citrix recommends not using ICA Proxy mode with ICA plug-in and Citrix Branch Repeater plug-in under any circumstances. This deployment with ICA Proxy mode has the following disadvantages:

  • The Citrix Branch Repeater appliance must be installed in DMZ.
  • There is an access to the Citrix Branch Repeater from the Internet.
  • Requires Citrix Branch Repeater software release 5.7 and SSL Acceleration.
  • Does not provide cross-session ICA acceleration.
  • SSL encryption or decryption removes the benefits of network acceleration.
  • Not formally tested in-house.
